FLORENCE, S.C. - The theme for this year's Day of Caring was "Treasure Your Community" and more than 400 volunteers did just that on Friday.
The United Way's 25th annual event brought out a record 430 volunteers from 32 to complete more than 80 projects across the community.
The Pee Dee Coalition was one of the organizations to receive the benefits of volunteer help. Dozens of workers from Patheon, Monster, and Otis Elevator did a variety of work at both their Irby and Dargan Street sites.
Pee Dee Coalition executive director Ellen Hamilton said the work these volunteers did is invaluable.
"This is one of the best things the United Way of Florence does. We rely on this kind of help," she said. "We have old buildings that need a lot of work that we're not able to do. It's critical. We brag about them all over the state."
Duke Energy employees were working at the Boys and Girls Club of the Pee Dee, primarily handling exterior cleaning and landscaping.
"We look forward to the Day of Caring every year," said Decar Brown, spokesman for the Boys & Girls Club. "It's a chance for us to catch up on projects that are a challenge for us throughout the year. It's a huge saving to us and we greatly appreciate it."
The Day of Caring campaign was started in 1992, and since then more than 5,900 volunteers have participated in 1,240 projects.
Volunteers this year came from ADP Tax Credit Services, Assurant, Carolinas Hospital System, City of Florence, Community Broadcasters, DrayDigital Photography, Duke Energy, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, First Citizens Bank, First Reliance Bank, Florence Civic Center, Florence Co. Probation & Parole, GE Healthcare, HillSouth, Honda of South Carolina, Junior League of Florence, Johnson Controls Battery Recycling, Johnson Control Distribution Company, McLeod Health, Monster Worldwide, Morning News, Orr Company, Otis Elevator, Palmetto Secure Document Destruction, Patheon, Pepsi-Cola of Florence, PGBA LLC, The Carolinian RHF, Senior Citizens Association, WestRock, Williamsburg Technical College, and Volunteer CORPS.
